The High-Stakes Competition Context

This was not a classroom exercise dressed up as a product. It was an intense cohort-wide competition where three specialized teams were measured against ambition, execution, and delivery.

The Environmental group shipped Butterfly. The Health group shipped Osmose. We were the Tech group — Zirtech — tasked with proving that hardware, local intelligence, and companion software could land as one coherent ecosystem.

Under that pressure, every CAD iteration, sensor choice, and interface decision had a deadline attached. The competition frame forced clarity: design what you can manufacture, fund what you believe in, and ship what actually works on a wrist and in a browser.

The Hardware & 3D Prototyping — The SolidWorks Grind

We did not buy a cheap off-the-shelf plastic shell and pretend it was engineering. We engineered the watch casing from scratch.

Our team self-taught SolidWorks to design the structural CAD model — tolerances, enclosure volumes, sensor mounting planes, and assembly clearances — then iterated the physical assembly until the form factor matched both ergonomics and electronics.

Those digital models became a real wearable: we 3D printed the physical casing, validated fit against the hardware stack, and refined the print until the prototype stopped being a concept and started being a device you could wear.

Development Cycle, Self-Funding & Mentorship

The full arc was a demanding seven-month development process — from first CAD sketches to a working physical-digital loop.

To make the vision real, our team completely self-funded the prototype materials and hardware components. Sensors, filaments, boards, and tooling came out of our own budget — a deliberate bet that ownership sharpens taste and urgency.

We also sought out and integrated professional mentorship from industry experts to refine our sensors and system architecture. That guidance was not decorative; it tightened our signal path, reduced dead ends, and accelerated the leap from ambitious sketch to reliable prototype.

Local AI & Companion Software — Zira

Zirtech runs on a dual-brain architecture: intelligence at the edge of the wearable, and intelligence in the companion platform that makes history intelligible.

First, a lightweight local AI runs directly on the wearable ecosystem to process health metrics and deliver instant, on-device user feedback — low latency, high privacy, no round-trip required for the moments that matter on the wrist.

Second, Zira — a sophisticated custom AI assistant integrated into our companion web interface — parses, visualizes, and analyzes aggregated historical health data. Where the wearable answers now, Zira answers over time: patterns, trends, and narrative insight across the dataset the device accumulates.

The Team Dynamic — Core Philosophy

Zirtech proved a simple, hard truth: when highly dedicated minds unite, invest their own resources, and lean into true collaborative trust — the power of complex team synergy — they can ship ambitious, production-grade physical-digital ecosystems.

Hardware without software is a shell. Software without hardware is a demo. Together, under competition pressure and self-funded grit, Zirtech became both.

We won at the end.
